Listen, if you’re trying to lose weight in a time when it seems like there’s a new fast food joint popping up every day across the street and it seems like temptation is at every turn, you’re not alone. It’s getting harder and harder for people to make a good effort to lose weight and get healthier, despite the soaring rates of obesity in this country!
No matter what your reason for trying to get it done, good for you. It’s getting started that matters! One thing that you absolutely must know is how *dieting* works, when it does. (And if you do it right, it will)
The idea behind a diet is essentially to reduce the amount of calories you take in as opposed to how many calories you burn off. Seems simple, but it’s tricky as I’m sure you know. Every food has a corresponding number of calories and it’s crucial that you have an idea of what your caloric intake is.
Why? Our bodies need a certain number of calories every day just to survive. If the amount of calories you consume each day matches the amount you burn off – you maintain your weight. If you eat fewer calories you create what’s called a *calorie deficit* and your body will use its reserves of fat, carbohydrates and even proteins in your body to use as energy. Over time, you lose weight.
On the other hand, calorie reduction is not a zero sum game. If you overdo your caloric reduction your body will think that you’ve lost your source of food altogether – which is not a good thing, it can lead to a slowing metabolism which means – you don’t lose weight. Your body doesn’t know you’re dieting – it thinks you’re *dying* of starvation to be more precise.
How do you avoid this? It’s not as hard as you think!
You can fool your brain! If you simply shift your caloric intake around a little each day with an overall calorie reduction over the course of a week – your body thinks it has all the food it needs and presto, you keep losing weight.
